There are many factors that can affect your automobile insurance rates. Some of them can be controlled easily with a little planning. Here, Farmers Insurance agent Kyla Goure lays out a few tips that you should keep in mind to minimize your premiums.

Your car affects your rates.

As fun as they are, if you drive a fast, small car you will probably find yourself paying a higher premium for your auto insurance. A car with extra safety features and even energy efficient or hybrid cars will lower your rate.

The higher the deductible, the better!

If you believe you are a good driver, a high deductible may be a good choice for you. Deductibles are what you have to pay out of pocket in case of an accident before the auto insurance kicks in. It’s best to choose the highest deductible you believe you can afford at any given time. Doing so will greatly reduce your premium.

Don’t ever let your policy lapse.

When an insurance company sees someone has been driving without auto insurance, especially since it is required by state law, they will consider you more irresponsible than others and charge you a higher premium.

Your credit score affects your rates.

This may sound strange, but credit score is a good way to judge one’s responsibility. Not only does good credit indicate your odds of paying on time, but it is also an effective judge of character- which auto insurance companies find important!

Be a safe driver!

The most important thing is your safety and the safety of others on the road. Insurance companies want to insure the safest drivers, so your driving habits greatly affect what your insurance rates will be. Practice safe driving, not only for lower rates but for your own wellbeing!

Ask for discounts!

Don’t be afraid to talk over all discounts with your agent. There are MANY different variables that your agent will be able to tell you about such as your current career, your grade point average and setting up online payments.
